IPAG is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition Lost & Found/Flotsam & Jetsam, by Dunedin based artist Blue Black. This exhibition will open to the public on 2 December 2017, and run until 13 January 2018.

Blue Black is a process driven maker who works with clay and a range of found and discarded organic and man-made materials.  He dips flowers, vegetables, plant roots, egg cartons, clothes and various other scavenged materials in layers of clay slip, before firing, glazing, firing again, and then working and reworking until they find a new life.  His process is evolving and intuitive and results in organic, colourful and often unsettling sculptures that are only vaguely suggestive of their original form.

Blue’s work has received him national attention as a finalist in the prestigious Wallace Awards in 2008 and the Portage Ceramic awards in 2006, 2014 and most recently in 2017. In 2014, Blue was the Premier Winner of the Lysaght Watt Trust Art Award.

The installation at IPAG brings together a selection of recent and new works, some of which were created specifically for his show at the Eastern Southland Gallery earlier this year. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring Blue’s work to the deep south for Invercargill public and visitors to the region to enjoy.

Creation Station

In conjunction with this exhibition, IPAG is holding a ‘Creation Station’ in the back gallery space of 5 Don Street.

This will be an informal open space for children (11 years and under) to create their own mini ‘Blue Black inspired sculpture’ using clean, recycled materials such as egg cartons, milk bottle tops and empty hand towel rolls in conjunction with crepe paper, pipe cleaners, coloured card, sticks, twigs, balls of wool and other materials. There will also be a place within this space for children to display their artworks for others to see, as well as take photographs of their works to upload to the IPAG Facebook page.

Creation Station is open 10.30am - 4pm, Tuesday - Friday from Tuesday 5th December – Friday 22nd December.
Parental supervision is required at all times. Due to space restrictions, 15 people in total at a time.

If any members of the Invercargill public have any clean recycled materials that they would like to donate to this project, please drop them to 5 Don Street between 10am - 4pm Monday - Friday.
